"God is in the details" * Ludwig Mies van der Rohe
It's universal. In some way or another we've all experienced "that little gap" (sorry about yours ). We can all relate. It's such a small part of the image, but I think it "humanizes" him.
I suppose only those, like myself, who've been filled in the the creators of these characters can totally know that the story is; but I really like how anyone can draw their own conclusions from it. if you'd be so kind as to oblige, I'd be very curious to learn what your take on them is.
Well, this is the gist of "story" I get surrounding this image:
Obviously it is not about straight men (could be homosexual, bisexual, whatever label), but more than just sexual attraction there is really an emotional component here.
The supine figure is laughing (with excitement, humor, whatever), but clearly exceptionally comfortable with what's going on, and eager--which is in a pretty stark contrast to the fact that he's still carrying his piece. That says something about his character (that he can even be so joyful and relaxed while armed) as well as implying a surrounding story of tension and danger. That surrounding story is really what I meant by "implied story", and it makes this fun little moment all the more powerful for being an exception to whatever's normally going on for these men.
The standing figure is smiling too, and his eyes are busy devouring the supine figure, meaning that either this type of meeting is rare enough that he craves it, or that they are still in that fervent early period of a relationship where your lover is new and wonderful (note that this period can last a long time in some relationships and not long in others). He's wearing business clothes, which gives some more info on his character--and he lacks a gun, so there's some difference between the characters. Hair color makes him the younger one as well. He was clearly the second person to arrive, given his position and relative greater degree of dress.
Speaking of body position, there's unexpected stuff there. Normally, you'd assume that the unarmed, younger, slighter man would be the more eager and less dominant partner, but the reverse of that is clearly true here. That's interesting all by itself.
The title fleshes out the image a lot (titles are very important, and I hate either written or visual art that is "Untitled" because it's such a waste of an opportunity on the artist's part to expand the scope). Referencing the mafia creates interesting plot questions--is the armed one a mafia goon, and the slender one a mafia don's son? Or is one a cop and the other a mafia bedfellow? In any case, given the Catholic leanings of the Italian mob, their relationship is probably hidden from the mob elements of the story, which makes their joy at being together even more notable. These are two men who probably shouldn't be together, and whose circumstances are dangerous and violent at least part of the time, and yet they've come together for this short time of joy and happiness. And that's a great story, even not knowing the details.
Wow man, on point! Which is awesomely validating! I'm really glad you were able to pick up on sooooo much. The supine figure is a law enforcement officer, and the standing figure is a made man, married to the Don's little Princess. They've been having this affair for many years, but don't see each other very often. You nailed it bro. Thank you so much for taking the time to break it down.

That's what I meant. What do you think of it?
